i've got a few! i've only seen one of these myself, but the other two were recommended to me by someone i trust a lot when it comes to media recs, who gave quite a bit of information regarding each rec, so i'll just be directly passing along the information i was given about those two (^_^) Neon Genesis Evangelion – R18 this is the one i have seen. admittedly, queerness isn't exactly centric to its story, but i still enjoy it quite a lot. that being said, it touches on some pretty heavy topics, being neon genesis evangelion and all. since it's pretty well-known, though, it's not hard to find content warning lists (like one i read here before i watched; i'd also like to point out that the content warning it mentions for episode 22 only exists in the director's cut, and the post doesn't mention the themes and imagery of suicidal ideation). if you're having any confusion regarding the existence of the accompanying movies, the typical watch order is the show, then the movie end of evangelion (which, i should warn, does include a scene of no-contact sexual assault as well as a brief depiction of pedophilia), then the rebuild movies in order of release (though they're completely optional, and i'm not a fan of their ending); evangelion death & rebirth is not necessary at all for viewing, as it's just a recap of the show. all in all, neon genesis evangelion is certainly a unique viewing experience with compelling narratives regarding human connections and depression, so i recommend it despite the content warnings, but i wouldn't want you to watch it if something on the content warning list would be a serious obstacle to your overall enjoyment, of course. Revolutionary Girl Utena – R18 this one's been on my watchlist for a while, given it was recommended by the aforementioned individual as well as a friend of mine from high school. revolutionary girl utena is an often-referenced classic, and like the previous entry, touches on a lot of heavier topics; unlike the previous entry, however, it is explicitly about queer themes. it's also about the cycle of abuse and the transition between adolescence and adulthood. you can find a comprehensive episode-by-episode content warning list here. despite not having seen it myself, based on the praises i have read from close friends and from seeing it referenced in other media, i feel comfortable recommending it if you can stomach a watch. even if it's not very graphic in terms of blood and violence, it's not for every adult, given it explicitly contains grooming, CSA, rape, incest, and general sexual harassment, as well as a suicide attempt. alongside that, it's a bit long, and supposedly somewhat strangely paced, plus some of the storytelling can get a bit abstract at times. Tokyo Godfathers - R16 this one isn't a full show, actually, it's just a movie, but i thought i'd add it regardless. it's by satoshi kon, who is known for his other movies paprika and perfect blue, which are widely praised. tokyo godfathers is a comedy-drama about three homeless people in search of an abandoned baby's mother, each very different from one another. i will warn that this movie contains a bit of dated homophobic and transphobic language, and the depiction of the trans woman does lean a little on the caricature side of things, but she as well as the other main characters are treated with real love. their struggles regarding their different places in society are treated with realism rather than depicted as a joke. as for content warnings, i'm told this movie contains somewhat graphic violence (some of it against homeless people in particular), nudity, and on-screen attempted suicide.
to my knowledge, tokyo godfathers is somewhat of a winter holiday movie, as i typically see people talk about it more during the wintertime. some people say it's one of their go-to yearly watches, and that it made them cry. 'tisn't the season, but it might still be an enjoyable watch outside the holiday. i myself plan to watch it on my next holiday.
i have also heard good word about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, but i don't know enough about it to make a short write-up like these other recs, though i know that it includes a canon lesbian couple. do with that information what you will!

So I just started watching Revolutionary Girl Utena! Stylistically, I really like it. The animation's beautiful. As a brown girl, I'm living for Anthy <3 I've watched a fair amount of this, I have no idea what's going on, tbh.... Strangely paced is a good way of putting it. I like that it's long and I can put it on in the background and not just burn through the entire series. The best part is the music, honestly the most mind-blowing songs I've ever heard. The lyrics. I can't even speak on it. I love this metaphor of revolution for queerness, metaphorically this sh*t is cr*zy. I'm not sure if this is the audience for this, but I'm trying to do some shrooms and watch this because what. is. going. on? It's giving me like, Greek mythology, the story's high key problematic but it's an epic tale, I'm going along for this ride. Yeah, there's a lot of subject matter that's weird and I'd rather it not be a part of the show, but I also see, from a reclaiming narratives perspective, there's validity in referencing these things so people have a means to work through their own trauma. All of this is to say, I see a lot that might disturb people, this show's kinda disturbing me. But same with Sailor Moon, it's the challenge of portraying middle-school aged kids. It's kinda a questionable thing to do. Acknowledging that, I love seeing a young heroine, it's a great patriarchy-smashing trope from Sailor Moon to the Wizard of Oz. This takes that to the next level with Utena's unwillingness to comply with gender norms, her desire to be a prince, and overtly queer storylines. I'm really interested to see where this show goes. Let me know if you end up watching it, cowboy .
