ok, so i saw this video on youtube the other day, and it made the joke that "the best part of a cucumber tastes like the worst part of a watermelon", and i was really confused, because to me cucumbers are spicy as all hell. i asked my dad about it, and he said that he finds cucumbers spicy too, but that it wasnt normal. and that was when i learned that apparently to most people, they just taste like water??? he says its a genetic thing, that around 5% of the population have what im calling "spicy cukeitis", but i cant find anything online about it. does anyone else know what im talking about??

are you sure you aren't allergic? often when I see people describe a non-spicy food as spicy, it turns out they were having an allergic reaction. you might not be allergic to cucumbers, but continuing to eat foods you are allergic to can be quite bad for your health, so it might be good to check just in case. I really like cucumbers(just as much if not more than watermelons tbh) but yeah they are not spicy to me, and I have never heard about this, though there are other genetic differences in the taste of food, like how cilantro tastes like soap to me and celery and broccoli taste bitter, so I wouldn't be that surprised if there were more! upon googling, it does seem like the bitter-taste gene can effect cucumbers, which results in some people absolutely hating cucumbers, though it fluctuates. cucumbers taste bitter to me and i like them still. none of the people talking about it describe it as being spicy though

i have no idea how both me and my dad didnt realise this sooner yeah I think that's somewhat common? people don't get born with a guidebook to life so we all just have to figure it out. I have had friends who also thought foods were just spicy at first!
